Partly due to its insularity, Madagascar has long remained unreached by the trend of translation and translation studies spreading through the Western countries, especially in the 1970s. However, major historical events lead Malagasy people to translate a certain type and a certain number of foreign works. When did those events happen and to what extent did they call for the need of translation? How is shaped the use of translation in Madagascar? What is the future of translation studies and translation practices? Those are the questions that will be discussed within this paper.

Key words: History, prospects, translation, Madagascar
